Jack smiled as he hearted the message, finally banishing the silent worry about the election he’d been carrying all morning. Practically everyone had assured him that Damon would win. But Jack’s hard-earned confidence in his situation had been recently tested, so he took nothing for granted.

Damon’s win almost put Jack in such a good mood that he didn’t care about the faded remnants of the morning’s graffiti attack on his locker. Almost. But it was still there. Jack tried to ignore it as he stuffed his guitar in his locker, grabbed his lunch, and hunted for Damon. He found his boyfriend sitting on their bench beside the field, surrounded by a mob of well-wishers. He was briefly tempted to turn around and walk away, leaving Damon to his fans. But that was just his jealousy flaring up. He was Damon’s boyfriend and outranked any other fan. Then one of the kids standing near Damon noticed Jack’s approach and quickly opened a space for him to get through to the bench.

“Thanks,” Jack shared as he squeezed through the mob.

Damon’s face lit up the moment he spotted Jack. “Babe! I was about to come look for you.”

Jack chuckled. “Okay, sure.”

“He really was,” Nick assured him. He’d sat next to Damon but immediately got up and offered the seat to Jack. “I was saving that for you. Ask Damon about the party.” He spread his arms before Jack could respond and began to usher the crowd away. “Come on, everyone. Let these two enjoy their lunch in peace.”

Jack took the seat Nick had thoughtfully warmed for him and threw his arms around Damon. “Congrats, babe. I knew you’d do it.”

Damon hugged him back. “Thanks, babe. I couldn’t have done it without you.”

Jack snorted. “We both know that’s not true. But you’re welcome.” He sat back and took in Damon’s handsome, smiling face, appreciating how his rich, brown eyes twinkled in the afternoon sunlight. “What was that Nick said about a party?”

“Ah, yeah. He’s having a victory party for me tonight at his place. You’re invited, of course.”

Jack hadn’t been to Nick’s place since the night of his Spring Fling party. That was the night he and Damon first kissed. It was also the night of Damon’s accident. He cautiously nodded. “Okay.”

A swift cloud of concern briefly darkened Damon’s face. “But you’re probably not in the mood for a party, are you? Not after, well, everything?”

Jack shrugged. “I don’t know. Part of me wants to go home and bury my head in my pillow until graduation.” He sighed. “But everything just feels weird right now. I’m anxious and jumpy because every time something like this happened to me, it was just the lead-up to a beating. But here, everyone’s being extra nice to me. So, maybe my instincts are wrong.” He shook his head. “Or, not. But it’s your victory party, so, of course, I’ll go.”

Damon frowned. “Are you sure?”

Then Jack suddenly understood. “You don’t want to go?”

Damon sighed. “I have to go. Nick would kill me if I didn’t.
